crater lake

with the long weekend, i thought i better catch up on some posts. during a recent trip to oregon my bff and i got a chance to visit crater lake. to tell you the truth i wasn't sure that i wanted to make the ~2 hour drive out to the lake but i was assured my r&h that it was well worth it.
well ... r&h were right, it was amazing. before i share some of the pictures here is a little background on crater lake. (FYI ... i am taking this information from the carter lake national park service handout) crater lake is 5 miles wide and ringed with cliffs almost 2,000 feet high, the lake rests in the shattered remnants of a volcano called mount mazama, which erupted and collapsed into itself 7,700 years ago. it is filled with rain and melted snow, at 1,943 feet deep, it is deepest lake in the united states and one of the deepest in the world.
when we pulled up to the first pullout - this was the site that greeted us ..

we decided to hike down to the water. it is a pretty strenuous hike down as the trail drops 700 feet in elevations in 1.1 miles (this is equivalent to climbing 65 flights of stairs. here is a picture of some of the switchbacks.

before we left to the lake we talked about taking our swim suits so that we could get in the water ... however, we were told that the water would be pretty cold and so we decided against it. but when we got there the water looked amazing and char being the daring person that she is peeled off a layer of clothes and prepared to jump in. here she is getting her camera set to record as she jumps in the water.
